Sell Online Advertising Space
by Ron Kurtus (revised 27 December 2014)
Selling advertising space on your website is a popular e-commerce revenue model.
There are a number of advertising programs where you can place ads from their clients and receive commissions, including single-ad placements, click-through ads, and sales-made programs.
Questions you may have include:
- How does single-ad placement work?
- How do click-through ads work?
- How do sales-made programs work?
This lesson will answer those questions.
Ad placement programs
Some businesses or their advertising agencies will pay you a flat fee for placing ads on various pages in your website. The amount may be from $30 to $100 for a year or even forever.
Usually advertising agencies will contact you, if they feel your website content appeals to their client's customers.
When a user sees an appealing ad on your website, such that he clicks the ad, he will usually be sent to the advertiser's website. The "click" is recorded for your website's account, and you will be given a small commission for the action.
A highly popular method is to use the Google AdSense program, where relevant ads are placed on your web pages, according to your content and key words. When users of your site click on an ad, you gain a commission.
A sales-made program will pay a commission if a person clicks on an ad from your website, goes to their website, and then makes a purchase.
A popular sales-made program is from Amazon.com. You might place an ad on your website about a recommended book. If a user clicks on that ad, goes to the Amazon.com website, and make any purchase—even if it is not the recommended book—you will get a commission on the sale. A typical commission is 6% of the sale price.
You can gain revenue by selling advertising space on your website. Advertising programs include single ad placements, click-through Google AdSense ads, and sales-made on Amazon.com ads.
